On Friday, June 26th, Milton celebrated his 80th birthday with friends and staff. Team MGI made t-shirts to honor the occasion, which Milton thought were both endearing and "corny".

Google has recently proposed using a variety of artists' works on their front page (one presumes in order to make it seem more attractive and interesting.) Google believes that it can use these works without paying for them because the artist involved would theoretically benefit from the exposure.
Artists frequently and appropriately work on a pro bono basis for charitable organizations and other social causes. Google doesn't quite match this description. The proposal can be interpreted as an indication of contempt towards illustrators and artists who have been contacted for this purpose. Many have refused to participate, others, responding to a decline in work, have agreed to cooperate.
Personally, I find it hard to imagine life without Google. I love the service, but in this case, they are pursuing a policy that can only be characterized by tacky opportunism. It is true that art has a higher purpose than financial reward. But this should not be used to justify exploiting illustrators and artists who are struggling to survive in a very difficult time.

The Drawing is Thinking exhibition presents 180 selected drawings compiled from Milton's most recent book of the same title. The drawings span over fifty years of work, and are varied in subject matter as well as style. The show is meant to be experienced sequentially, like a melodic line – with each drawing reflecting on what has passed in anticipation of what is to come.
The exhibition will be shown at Gelerija Vzigalica - The Gallery of the City Museum of Ljubljana, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from May 26 - June 19, 2009.

We have been working with the Brooklyn Brewery to develop their champagne bottle series. Based on the success of Local 1, Brooklyn has gradually added a number of new complex beers served in champagne-sized bottles to their roster, including Local 2, Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse, and Black Ops. Each beer has a unique flavor and body, as well as a suggested dynamic food pairing. Most can be found at your local beer retailer or at Whole Foods.
Local 1
Forged from barley malt and hops from Germany, aromatic raw sugar from Mauritius, and yeast from Belgium. 100% bottle re-fermented (a practice now rare even in Europe), and particularly nice with spicy seafood and fine cheeses.
Local 2
Composed of European malt and hops, Belgian dark sugar, and raw wildflower honey from a New York family farm. Hints of spice to the dark fruit, caramel, and chocolate flavors pair nicely with ham, duck, mushrooms, and washed-rind cheese such as Taleggio.
Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse
Banana and clove notes from the yeast, with the mango and citrus qualities of the hops. Pairs well with Caribbean seafood preparations, crab cakes, jerk chicken, Thai cuisine, Szechuan cooking and Mexican dishes.

1,400 college students die each year in the United States as the result of alcohol poisoning, while nearly 30,000 college students are put in the hospital annually from alcohol-related injuries. Shirley Kenny, President of Stony Brook University, asked Milton Glaser Inc. to create a response to toxic drinking in colleges all across America.
MGI appealed to Target to help the campaign, and they responded by manufacturing and contributing 2,000 red watches.
The campaign itself is based on the "designated driver" principle which has been successful in preventing alcohol-related accidents. Students receive comprehensive instruction on campus, training them to respond to fellow students in danger of dying from toxic drinking. Everyone who completes the course receives a red watch—the signal of participation.
A Red Watch Band advertising campaign is currently being rolled out to encourage awareness. The ad was published in the New York Times Magazine on May 24th, and was also featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education and USA Today previously.
To date, 74 colleges and universities as well as 30 high schools have joined Stony Brook in the Red Watch Campaign. These organizations are represented in 34 states as well as Washington D.C.

Seeing Things covers fifty years of Milton Glaser’s drawings, watercolors, prints, giclées, and sketchbooks, and a collection of arts-related posters.
A series called Black Prints is on exhibit for the first time. These large giclées challenge the viewer to discover images hidden in a field of closely related dark tonalities. The show also includes a collection of small-scale, limited-edition giclées selected from Milton Glaser’s most recent book, Drawing is Thinking. Signed books will be available at the gallery. The show will be on view at the at Stonybrook Southampton from May 2 - September 12, 2009.

The SVA Theatre opened at the end of April.
The School of Visual Arts intends to use the two auditoriums for student presentations, lectures, seminars, previews, and as a general cultural resource for the Chelsea area. The façade will change periodically as a giant commissioned work on a variety of topics, the first being “The Secret of Art.” Directly over the marquee is a kinetic sculpture based on Tatlin’s Homage to the Third Republic. It rotates on the hour. The time is indicated on the theater’s zipper and includes a variety of statements about the nature of time, such as:
We all have our time machines. Some take us back, they're called memories. Some take us forward, they're called dreams.
- Jeremy Irons
There is a time for departure even when there's no certain place to go.
- Tennessee Williams
Take time to deliberate, but when the time for action arives, stop thinking and go in.
- Napoleon Bonaparte
The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once.
- Albert Einstein.
A major element of the lobby interior has just been installed. Our bar is made of bent metal panels with a decorative pattern of dots created by spraying the surfaces through a frisket with automotive paint. Kevin O'Callahan, who supervised the construction, has created a technical tour de force.

Drawing is Thinking is the latest of Milton Glaser’s books, based on the idea that all art is a form of meditation. The book delineates that position. The drawings depicted are meant to be experienced sequentially, like a melodic line – each one reflecting on what has passed and anticipating what is to come. The primary intent is to explore how the mind works in its attempt to create reality.
